Module 3: Autism for VET professionals

Description

About the module

  • This module is designed for vocational education and training (VET) professionals who support students with a wide range of learning profiles — including those who may be autistic, whether formally diagnosed, self-identified, or not yet disclosed.
  • Autism may not always be visible, and not all students feel safe or ready to share this part of their identity. That’s why creating an environment where all learners feel respected, understood, and supported is key. When students trust that their needs will be met without judgment, they are more likely to communicate openly  leading to better outcomes for everyone.
  • In this module, you'll explore practical strategies to adapt teaching methods, improve communication, and build supportive learning environments that help autistic students succeed in skill-building, professional training, and the transition to work.
  • The focus is on flexible approaches that support clarity, consistency, and engagement  without requiring major changes or specialized resources. These strategies are designed to benefit all learners, while being especially helpful for autistic individuals.

This module is for:

  • VET trainers and educators who teach practical skills and vocational subjects.
  • Workplace mentors and supervisors who guide students in apprenticeships and internships.
  • School counselors and coordinators who help students transition from education to employment.

After taking this Module, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the strengths and challenges of autistic individuals in vocational education.
  • Adapt teaching and training methods to create an inclusive learning environment.
  • Facilitate successful transitions from education to employment.
  • Communicate effectively and provide needs-based support.
